Straight from the clink to the rink.
GM Danton has been brought into take over the underachieving Detroit Red Wings. After signing his multi-year deal earlier in the summer, Danton was prized in assuming GM duties over one of the most historic franchises of all-time. "Obviously, the tradition in Detroit goes back decades" Danton said. "I look to bring back some accountability and success to an organization that deserves it and a group of players that are capable of it." Strong assertions from a first-year GM.
If the first month is any indication on how Danton will fair, then his future seems bright. Almost immediately, luck was on his side with receiving the 3rd overall selection in this summers 1991 NHL entry draft. Quickly, Danton got to work and made some extremely impactful trades that helped bolster his roster for the present as well as the future. Mike Sillinger and Keith Primeau were shipped out for top-10 picks in the first round. A couple of more strategic deals brought another top-10 selection to the club as well as youngster Scott Young. It was obvious that Danton had some high-valued information regarding the 1991 entry draft class, and he was willing to bet his job on it.
The draft did not disappoint Danton. "I was extremely happy with our draft selections, as I believe we received NHL ready players." Lets take a look at some of those selections he made during his first NHL entry draft:
Scott Niedermeyer, 3rd overall - One of the smoothest, if not the smoothest, skater in the draft. Great first pass, vision and puck control on the power play. Can log big minutes, and is extremely intelligent with and without the puck. Highest rated defensemen in the draft. Good ol' Canadian boy!
Zigmund Palffy, 5th overall - This guy was born with a pair of mitts on. Great puck-handling ability, especially in tight. Good finishing touch around the net, and an above average shot. Another great offensive weapon on special teams due to his vision and unselfish ability. Best flow in the draft!
Chris Osgood, 8th overall - Small goaltender, but incredibly athletic and competitive. Plays a bit of a mix between stand-up and butterfly, but his desperation and agility is second to none in this draft. Easily the highest rated goalie that seems to play better the more rubber he faces. Favourite musician is Ozzy Osbourne!
Michael Nylander, 10th overall - Easily overlooked in this draft of Swedish players (Forsberg, Naslund). Nylander has all the tools to make himself a bonafide star in the NHL. Speed, agility, high hockey IQ, playmaking ability and defensive prowess make this Swede an easy top-10 pick. Known to have dated Forsberg's sister in middle school!
Additions such as Brian Savage and Jamie Pushor in the later rounds have made the 1991 NHL entry draft one to remember for this organization. "We believe as an organization, we have drafted some extremely talented players that are ready to make an impact for us now," Danton said. "We have used our assets to not only help us push forward this season, but to aid in our goal to be a Stanley Cup Champion for the future."
Detroit fans, imagine the budding star that we are anticipating to see from Nicklas Lidstrom ... now double that with the likes of Scott Niedermeyer joining the defensive core. Those two will be the best 1-2 pairing in the entire league. Steve Yzerman has begun to turn his one-dimensional offensive game into a two-way phenom at both ends of the rink. We have all seen what Sergei Federov can do on the ice, now add the same speed and skillset and call him Zigmund Palffy. Add to the galvanizing group of players already mentioned names like Gerarg Gallant, Shawn Burr, Scott Young, Kevin Miller, Vladimir Konstantinov, policeman Bob Probert and our young star goaltender Tim Cheveldae and you can see why Detroit fans are stirring for the beginning of the season to begin.
When Danton is asked if he's ready to start the season ... "There are still a couple of irons in the fire," he quickly torts. I am sure they will be hot to press when they unfold!
