In the first draft of POFHL, the Leafs went in, looking to either trade up or stay with their pick.
In the end, the Leafs stayed at number 6 and picked offensive teen Alexei Kovalev. He is the type
of player the Leafs need in the system. The team has a lot of forwards that provide 2 way service
but no real threat in goal scoring. The team will rely on defence and goaltending to win 2-1 and 3-2
games. Kovalev is a natural producer and will be relied on heavy, especially in his early years, to bring
the offence the team is going to need. Gm Sprackman is searching for help but right now, the team
is pretty well set up front.
With the 2nd pick for the Leafs, they drafted big and rugged Dman Sean O'Donnell. He is a project and
may see some ice time a year or two away. We are hoping he develops into the stay at home, in your
face Dman this team could use. We shall wait and see when he joins the team to see if this was a wise
pick at 28 overall.
With their 3rd round pick, the Leafs selected goalie Jamie "Noodles" McLennan. With a team already
sporting Fuhr and Potvin, taking a run on McLennan with a 3rd round pick is a good choice. He is a few years
from backing up in the POFHL and at that time, Potvin should be the undisputed #1 in Toronto and more then
likely a departure of Fuhr.
Last pick saw the Leafs pick up a project player in Yves Serault. Probably be a bottom tier player but with
time for him to develop, he may be a piece the Leafs can use in a couple seasons.
Getting Kovalev is a step in the right direction for the team. We shall see how the season plays out and
the position of the next draft. More then likely, will stick with Forward then Defence in the draft order for
a few seasons.
The team is excited to see how Kovalev fits in and hopefully will have a great rookie season.
